# What is Docsumo MCP

Connect AI agents like Claude, Cursor, and ChatGPT directly to your Docsumo account.

Docsumo MCP lets AI agents securely access your Docsumo account using the [Model Context Protocol](https://modelcontextprotocol.io) — an open standard for connecting AI assistants to real tools and data. Instead of copy-pasting between your AI assistant and Docsumo, your agent can directly:

* **Upload documents** (PDFs and images, by URL or file content) for extraction
* **Retrieve extracted data** — key-value fields and line-item tables — as clean JSON
* **Download documents** — a secure, time-limited link to the original file, a searchable PDF, page images, or the OCR text; or the extracted data as JSON, CSV, or XML
* **Track and manage review**: list documents, check statuses, approve or skip review, generate shareable review links
* **Run bank statement analytics**: cash-flow metrics, spending patterns, transaction insights
* **Orchestrate cases**: create cases, attach documents, move stages, trigger workflows, act on Human-in-the-Loop approvals

Example prompts once connected:

> "Upload this invoice PDF and give me the line items as a table."
> "Which documents from this week are still waiting for review?"
> "Pull the extracted data for doc `abc123` and check the totals add up."
> "Create a case for this loan application and run the workflow."<br />"Add a Vendor Tax ID field to the Invoice document type and test it on this sample."

## What your agent can work with

Beyond uploading and reading documents, the connected agent can reach most of what you would otherwise do in the Docsumo web app:

* **Document types&#x20;**— set up and refine what gets extracted: sections, fields, extraction prompts, and document type settings (general, pre-processing, extraction, post-processing, import/export)
* **Cases and workflows** — case types, case fields, validations, views and list tabs; build, test, publish, and run workflows
* **Tables** — read reference and entity tables from the Tables screen, including the records linked to a case
* **Database Tables** — read and maintain the CSV lookup tables that power dropdown field options
* **AI Model Hub** — browse the pretrained model catalog and enable models on your account
* **Analytics** — usage, processing-time, and field-level accuracy analytics for a document type
* **Activity log** — search the account-wide activity log and see activity counts
* **Settings** — account settings, members and roles, webhooks, and document type access

Every tool acts as the account behind the API key you connect with, and respects that account's role and plan. A member without access to a document type cannot reach it through MCP either.

## Connect to Docsumo MCP

Docsumo MCP is a hosted server — there is nothing to install:

```
https://mcp.docsumo.com/mcp
```

It uses the **Streamable HTTP** transport. Authenticate by sending your Docsumo API key as a header on the connection (see [Keys and authorization](#keys-and-authorization)):

```
Authorization: Bearer YOUR_DOCSUMO_API_KEY
```

Follow the setup guide for your client:

* [Claude Code](mcp-claude-code)
* [Claude Desktop & Web](mcp-claude-desktop-web)
* [Cursor](mcp-cursor)
* [VS Code (GitHub Copilot)](mcp-vs-code)
* [Windsurf](mcp-windsurf)
* [ChatGPT & OpenAI API](mcp-chatgpt)
* [Gemini CLI](mcp-gemini-cli)

For the full list of available tools and their parameters, see the [Tools reference](mcp-tools-reference).

## API limits and usage

* Docsumo MCP calls the same [Docsumo API](https://support.docsumo.com/reference/getting-started-with-your-api) as your own integrations: documents uploaded through MCP consume your plan's document credits exactly like uploads from the web app or API.
* The standard [rate limit](https://support.docsumo.com/reference/rate-limits) applies: **10 requests/second** per account.
* Long lists come back a page at a time — ask your agent to continue if you need more results. Batch downloads are capped at 25 documents per call.
* Monitor usage and remaining credits in your [account settings](https://app.docsumo.com/settings), or just ask your agent — the `get_account_info` tool returns monthly usage and limits.

## Keys and authorization

Docsumo MCP authenticates every request with your **Docsumo API key**:

1. Get your key from [Settings → API & Webhooks](https://app.docsumo.com/settings/webhook-api/) in the Docsumo web app.
2. Configure it as the `Authorization: Bearer` header in your MCP client (each setup guide shows where it goes).

  ### Treat your API key like a password

  The key grants the same access to your account as the Docsumo API — any agent connected with it can upload, modify review status, and run workflows on your behalf. Store it in your client's secret/keychain mechanism where available, never in shared config that gets committed to a repository. You can rotate the key at any time from the same settings page; reconnect your clients with the new key afterwards.

## Terms of use

Docsumo MCP is intended for use through MCP-compatible AI clients and agents operating on your own account (or accounts you administer). Usage is governed by your existing Docsumo agreement and the [API terms](https://support.docsumo.com/reference/getting-started-with-your-api); rate limits and plan quotas apply. Automated bulk scraping or sharing one API key across many end users is not permitted.
